A coolant bottle marked G13 is not automatically the right replacement for a bottle marked G12. These names refer to Volkswagen-group coolant specifications, not simply colors or levels of freeze protection. The correct choice depends on the vehicle, the fluid already installed, and the manufacturer's current service instructions.

Short answer: G11, G12, G12+, G12++, G13, and G12evo correspond to different VW TL 774 specifications. Match the required specification or a documented, vehicle-approved successor. Do not select by color, assume every generation mixes freely, or interpret a higher number as better protection.

1. G11–G12evo Specification Chart

Start with the complete specification suffix. “TL 774” alone is incomplete: the letter identifies the relevant version. The following chart is a naming reference, not permission to mix or substitute products.

2. What Is G11 Coolant?

G11 corresponds to TL 774-C. Products in this family use silicate-containing inhibitor technology. The important buying question is whether the exact fluid is documented for the required application—not whether its liquid looks blue or green.

Avoid forcing every European coolant into an overly simple “old IAT versus new OAT” classification. Hybrid inhibitor packages complicate that shorthand. For an older vehicle, also check service history. A reservoir marking may describe the original fill, while an authorized coolant replacement has since changed what is inside. Confirm both the installed fluid and the currently permitted replacement.

3. G12 vs G12+: Why the Plus Matters

G12 and G12+ correspond to TL 774-D and TL 774-F. They are related silicate-free OAT designations, but the suffix matters. A label or invoice shortened to “G12 coolant” can conceal which specification the supplier actually means.

LIQUI MOLY's KFS 12+ technical sheet, for example, separately lists recommendations for TL 774-D and TL 774-F. That illustrates why buyers should read the detailed specification statement rather than infer coverage from the product name alone.

Do not turn a product's coverage of several requirements into a universal rule for mixing all existing fills. Ask whether the proposed use is an approved top-up, a complete refill or a conversion requiring a particular service procedure.

4. G12++ vs G13 Coolant

G12++ maps to TL 774-G and G13 to TL 774-J. The second plus sign is meaningful: G12+ and G12++ are not identical specifications. Keep the exact designation on purchase orders, workshop records and shelf labels.

G13 is also not a synonym for propylene glycol. The currently listed LIQUI MOLY KFS 13 product is described as ethylene-glycol-based hybrid coolant. Check the actual product's SDS and technical documentation instead of assigning a base-fluid composition to every bottle carrying a G13 claim.

A glycol description alone cannot establish compatibility. Corrosion-inhibitor requirements, concentration and vehicle-specific approval still matter. Likewise, broad marketing terms such as “European coolant” or “long life” do not replace the required specification.

5. Can G12evo Replace Older Coolants?

G12evo has replaced older service fluids in many applications, but there are documented exceptions. Volkswagen's U.S. bulletin of February 24, 2022 covers 1994–2022 models excluding Routan. It describes G12evo supersession but requires G13 for specified MY2015 2.0L GEN III EA288 TDI engines with codes CVCA and CRUA.

Treat that dated bulletin as evidence that exceptions exist—not a universal authorization for every current vehicle or market. Confirm the latest VIN- and engine-specific service information before substituting a fluid, including the exact replacement product or part number.

A permitted newer service fill also does not establish the reverse substitution. “New fluid may replace old fluid” and “old fluid may be added to a vehicle requiring new fluid” are different decisions.

6. Can Color Identify the Correct Coolant?

Color can help document a known factory fill, but it cannot positively identify an unknown aftermarket mixture. Dye conventions vary between products, and previous maintenance may have changed the contents of the system.

Ask for the bottle label, invoice or service record. Pink liquid is not proof of TL 774-F, J or L compliance, and matching colors do not prove matching inhibitor packages.

Brown coolant is not automatically rust: the cited VW bulletin notes that certain mixtures involving G12evo and legacy fluids can turn brown without requiring replacement for that color change alone. 7. Can These Coolants Be Mixed?

Use a manufacturer mixing chart only within its stated scope. Audi's March 31, 2023 U.S. bulletin places the factory-filled coolant across the top and the service coolant down the side. It distinguishes permitted mixtures from combinations that reduce corrosion protection and those that cannot be mixed.

That directional layout matters. A simple online green checkmark can hide which fluid is already installed, which is being added, and whether the result is recommended for continued service. This guide therefore uses a decision table instead of a universal pairwise mixing matrix.

8. How to Choose Coolant for Your Vehicle

Use this sequence before opening a container:

  1. Record the VIN, engine code, model year and market. Model name alone is insufficient.
  2. Find the current coolant requirement and any applicable replacement bulletin.
  3. Identify the existing fill from reliable records, not color alone.
  4. Match the exact proposed product and its documentation to the application.
  5. Confirm whether it is concentrate or premix and follow the required service procedure.

Where the handbook and a later service bulletin appear inconsistent, ask the manufacturer or qualified service provider to resolve the requirement for that vehicle. Do not resolve the conflict by choosing the newest-sounding number.

9. Concentrate, Premix and Water Quality

The G-code does not tell you whether to add water. Ready-to-use coolant is already diluted; concentrate requires the specified water and ratio. Do not use undiluted concentrate merely because winter conditions are severe.

Water requirements can be manufacturer-specific. The cited Audi bulletin specifies distilled water and explicitly excludes deionized water. Do not assume those terms are interchangeable for every application; use the current vehicle instructions and compatible product directions.

After service, verify freeze protection with the correct instrument and scale for the coolant. A satisfactory freeze-point reading does not confirm the inhibitor identity, eliminate contamination or prove that the wrong specification is acceptable.

Never open a hot or pressurized cooling system. Follow the product SDS for handling and disposal, keep coolant away from children and animals, and have unexplained coolant loss checked rather than repeatedly topping up.

10. What Distributors Should Verify

For wholesale or private-label purchasing, ask the supplier for the exact product code, TDS, SDS, specification claim wording, and supporting test or approval documentation. Keep these records linked to the formulation and batch being supplied.

“Recommended for,” “meets requirements,” and “OEM approved” should not be treated as equivalent. Request evidence for the claim actually printed on the label. A generic automotive coolant test report alone does not establish a particular Volkswagen approval.

Also confirm concentrate versus premix, declared protection at the supplied concentration, packaging, traceability, and application limitations. Avoid a single catalog line promising compatibility with every G11–G12evo application unless that exact claim is adequately supported.

11. Frequently Asked Questions

Is G12+ the same as G12++?

No. G12+ corresponds to TL 774-F; G12++ corresponds to TL 774-G. Keep the plus signs and full specification visible when comparing products.

Can I mix G12 and G13?

Do not assume unrestricted compatibility. Check the applicable manufacturer chart for the installed coolant and proposed service fluid, including any corrosion-protection limitations.
