Can You Use Straight Antifreeze as Coolant?

Do not use 100% concentrate unless the vehicle and product manufacturer explicitly require it. In conventional cooling systems, water is an essential part of the heat-transfer mixture. Increasing glycol beyond the approved range does not keep improving protection.

Too much concentrate can increase viscosity, reduce heat-transfer performance and provide worse freeze protection than a correctly prepared mixture. Vehicle requirements differ, but approved operating ranges commonly place practical limits on both minimum and maximum glycol concentration.

Color can help a user see the reservoir level or trace a leak, but it does not reliably identify chemistry or compatibility. Two products of the same color can meet different specifications.

How to Top Up Coolant Safely

  1. Park safely and allow the engine and cooling system to cool completely.
  2. Identify the required coolant specification and the fluid already in the system.
  3. Use a compatible, correctly prepared product. Do not mix products simply because their names or colors appear similar.
  4. Fill only to the cold-level mark specified for the vehicle. Do not overfill.
  5. If the level continues to fall, inspect for leaks or other cooling-system faults instead of repeatedly topping up.

Safety note: Never remove a pressurized cooling-system cap while the engine is hot. Hot coolant and steam can cause serious burns.
